UOM Announces 24-Hour Strike for Workers' Rights

The Metalworkers' Union (UOM) has announced that it will hold a 24-hour strike next Wednesday, May 7, as part of a new struggle plan. The main objective of this measure is to demand 'free bargaining' and reject the 'anti-industrial' policies implemented by the government of President Javier Milei.

In a statement released through their social media, the UOM, nationally led by Abel Furlán, affirmed its commitment to the defense of labor rights and the improvement of working conditions. The 24-hour strike marks the beginning of a series of measures that will include 48 and 72-hour work stoppages in the following weeks, with the dates of these actions yet to be confirmed.

The struggle plan was approved during the National Congress of Delegates of the UOM, held from April 7 to 9 in Mar del Plata. The decision to initiate these measures came after the bargaining negotiations with business chambers failed, which proposed a salary increase of 2% for April and 1% for May and June, a proposal rejected by the union as insufficient given the rise in inflation.

Abel Furlán indicated in a recent radio interview that the situation is critical, with the loss of thousands of jobs and the possibility that tens of thousands more are at risk due to the indiscriminate opening of imports. In addition to the strike, assemblies will be held in factories, in line with the protest actions carried out in March 2024 as part of this same struggle.
